The last thing you expect when singing in a staircase in Africa is that you’ll be discovered by Canadian superstar Celine Dion. Well, that’s exactly what happened to 17-year-old Samuel from Gabon. His brother recorded and then posted a video of him singing ‘The Power of Love,’ made popular by Dion in the ’90s. The video was then picked up by a Gabonese blogger and eventually caught Dion’s attention.
In the video, Samuel’s a cappella version of the song sounds almost exactly like Celine Dion. It’s verging on scary. He sings in both French and English, and Dion took his bilingual lead when replying to him.
How amazing is that?
Samuel talked to AFP Africa about his sudden fame, and called it overwhelming and surprising. He doesn’t even have Facebook and didn’t know his video was gaining popularity until his brother told him.
Now, he’s recognized in the street, he’s been approached by TV singing contest producers from Europe and he intends to pursue a career in music. With how similar he sounds to Celine, it looks like the precedent is on his side for a successful career.
