18-year-old Leah Borneman was manning the checkout line at a Brampton No Frills when she got a call. On the other end of the line was Ellen DeGeneres. Yes. That Ellen. Ellen. De. Generes.

So why would Saint Ellen randomly call up a Brampton teen (at work, no less)? It started when DeGeneres put out a call for Canadian viewers to write in about why they were fans of the show. Borneman — being the mega-fan that she is — did just that, explaining that watching the show with her ill grandmother was a special thing they would do together. Next thing you know, Ellen’s secretary, in full fairy-godmother garb, showed up with a whopping $15,000 in-hand to offer the overwhelmed teen for her education.

Ellen’s made no secret about her love of Canadian fans. Between insisting on an 11-year-old superstar dancer from Alberta appear on her show and now this, clearly the love affair between Ellen and Canada is mutual.
