Everyone knows that almost all Canadians love hockey. It’s like a second marriage to us; something we commit to and cherish deeply.
But did you know your relationship with the sport can actually influence your intimate relationships with people? We aren’t talking about Leafs fans butting heads with Canadiens supporters, we’re talking about a dating style you subconsciously forge that mirrors the elements of your hockey fanship.
In other words, your favourite hockey team can say a lot about how you date. At least, that’s according to a new survey by Match.com. The dating website set out to determine if there was any connection between sports and love, and they found one so solid you might actually get the chills.
Here are the survey’s highlights:
Toronto Maple Leafs: Fans of Toronto’s hockey team scored as extremely devoted lovers, but almost to a fault (sound familiar?). Fourty-two per cent of respondents who supported the Leafs have gotten back in a relationship with an ex, which is far higher than the Canadian average. Interestingly, once they’re back in those relationships, Leafs fans are the least likely to follow up to see if their partner is meeting their standards.
Calgary Flames: If you’re looking for fiery passion in the bedroom, Flames fans are where you’ll find it. These people are all about turning up the heat, in any way they can. Bad kissers are the worst for these folks, who are also among the most likely to send their partners dirty, sexually-charged text messages.
Montreal Canadiens: It should come as no surprise that fans of one of Canada’s most successful hockey teams also have high standards in the dating world. These are people who want all the attention to be on them. So while most people would be put off on a first date by someone who’s rude to say, restaurant staff, Canadiens fans are more likely to be turned off by a date who gets distracted by their phone or other devices.
Winnipeg Jets: Winnipeg fans only recently got their hockey team back, after their love relocated to Atlanta for a while. It makes sense then, that the survey found Jets fans tend to be the most cautions when it comes to love, and almost a little bitter. They don’t believe in love at first sight and tend to view affection more negatively than the rest of the group.
Vancouver Canucks: Hockey fans on the West Coast tend to be mysterious and hard to read. Maybe it’s because they live near the ocean, which is chock full of its own secrets. But they also have a tendency to date during the playoffs more than other hockey fans.
Ottawa Senators: You can think of Ottawa fans as defenders of the traditional date. They’re old fashioned when it comes to love. Fifty-seven per cent wouldn’t have a one-night stand, and when they do have sex, they prefer the lights to be off.
Edmonton Oilers: Edmonton’s hockey fans, eerily enough, are the most likely to spend big on a first date. Between $60-$80, to be precise.
