The world has turned to crowdfunding for many noble reasons in the past: business startups, creating new products and getting funding for trips. But now, a group of people have unexpectedly turned to crowdfunding to restore a historical 21,196-km wall.

That’s right, folks, the Great Wall of China’s about to get a makeover, all thanks to a crowdfunding campaign from the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation. And every donation can make a difference.

As heartwarming as it is to see the world coming together to improve the state of such a massive Chinese monument, we can’t help but wonder why the conservation group had to turn to crowdfunding in the first place.

“Despite the support from the central government, a large part of the Great Wall is at risk and disappearing,” explained Dong Yaohui, a director of the Great Wall of China Society (who is also helping to organize the campaign). “By pooling the contribution of every single individual, however small it is, we will be able to form a great wall to protect the Great Wall.”

And while the wall does still stand in all of its historical glory, it’s been worn down over hundreds of years by weather and tourist or agricultural theft. According to Dong, UNESCO also doesn’t offer funding–even though it is a UNESCO world heritage site. So it’s up to the world, including you, to pitch in financially and help the wall be restored.

The group is hoping to raise 11 million yuan (approximately $1.7 million USD or $2.1 million CAD) by December 1st, 2016. And considering that they successfully raised around $140,000 CAD already, it seems that they’re well on their way to reaching their goal.
