Although the big screen adaptation of E.L. James’ sexy time-filled bestseller 50 Shades of Grey was an international cash-raking success, its creation was marred by some well-publicized infighting.
Reportedly due to constant creative clashes with James, the film’s screenwriter and director Kelly Marcel and Sam Taylor-Johnson bailed on the 50 Shades franchise after Grey’s release, leaving some serious vacancies for the upcoming sequel 50 Shades Darker. But fear not, the next film has found screenwriter who will most likely NOT fight with Jones. That’s because the new screenwriter is…get this…her husband!
It was announced that Niall Leonard, E.L.’s beau, is set to screen write 50 Shades Darker. This news seems a little fishy following the rumours that James was pushing to screen write the sequel herself (despite having no experience). A little too convenient, huh?
While it does appear that this is just a blatant way for James to flex more creative control over the script this time around, Leonard does have some experience. He has authored the Crusher book series and was part of the writing team that penned UK TV shows Air Force One Is Down and Wire in the Blood. Hmm.
It should be interesting to see if the sequel can live up to the money making success of its predecessor. If it tanks, I guess Niall will be sleeping on the couch.
