We all loved Cheers. And part of the reason we adored it so much was the group chemistry, a group led by lead bartender and resident Lothario, Sam Malone. As impossible as it is to picture anyone other than Ted Danson filling the role of the hilariously suave pro ball player turned barkeep, the part was originally intended for someone else. Who? Oh, just a guy named Bill Cosby. We’re serious!

In The Hollywood Reporter’s list of top 100 shows of all time, they let us in on the fact that NBC originally wanted Cosby to be Cheers‘ leading man.

According to the show’s co-creator Les Charles, “We declined because it would have meant doing the Bill Cosby Show.” Danson then scored the part.

Cosby of course ended up getting The Cosby Show that aired on NBC the same night as Cheers and television history was written.

But really, how bizarre is it to picture Bill Cosby as Sam Malone? Allow us to help you visualize the weirdness:

cheers

Ehh. Maybe it could have worked.
