One of our favourite parts of watching The Launch (Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV) is seeing the newly formed relationships between the mentors and the artists. Never has that bond been stronger than with this week’s episode. We always expect to have a good time whenever Canadian icon Jann Arden is on screen, making us laugh, making us feel, making us wonder where she got her fierce outfit. This week we got to watch Jann fall in love with Olivia Lunny just as we fell in love with the Calgary newcomer as well. Jann would buy Olivia’s record. We’ve bought all of Jann’s records and are now ready to buy Olivia’s song. It was a big lovefest and resulted in an incredible song with “I Got You.”

As always, this week’s episode included show creator and mentor Scott Borchetta, as well as pop superstar Marie-Mai. Rounding out the guest mentors with Jann was producer extraordinaire Shaun Frank, who brought a bona fide pop hit with him in the form of “I Got You.”

We quickly fell in love with Olivia Lunny’s unique and deep pop voice, but she wasn’t the only artist that had us stunned this week. Olivia was joined in the recording booth by singer Jayde, who left her mark with a pitch-perfect pop delivery of “I Got You.” Nick Babcock impressed the mentors with his original music, Julia Gartha gave a beautiful audition performance, and Clancy Coulter had us doing a second-take for Adele. But it was Olivia’s authentic delivery of “I Got You” that helped get her launched. Jann, time to buy that album.

From her original sound to her incredible artistry, here are seven times Olivia Lunny stunned the mentors.

WHEN JANN GOT BIEBER/OLIVIA FEVER

It didn’t take long for Olivia’s newest fan to make herself known. Performing a dark and moody cover of Justin Bieber’s “As Long As You Love Me,” Olivia impressed all of the mentors, especially Jann Arden. “Your voice is crazy cool. I cannot sit here and tell you that you sound like one person,” said Jann. “Your style I feel is really stamped. I get a real sense of what you’re about and I really like it.”

WHEN JANN GAVE THE MOST USEFUL ADVICE ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

Introducing her original song “On My Level,” Olivia admitted that she usually sticks close to the same topic, writing mostly about love and heartbreak. “You can make money doing it,” joked Jann. “You hang in there!” Arden followed up her hilarious and accurate advice with a promise. “I would buy that record,” said Jann. “I love what you do.”

WHEN OLIVIA INSPIRED A NEW “I GOT YOU”

Following Olivia’s audition, producer Shaun Frank quickly found himself imagining his straight-pop track as a song with a more alt-indie feel. “She has that identity in her voice,” said Shaun. Scott agreed, saying, “I feel like there’s more inside her as an artist. I’m curious to see how far we can push her.”

WHEN SHE SAILED THROUGH TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES

During her time in the recording studio with Shaun and Scott, Olivia had already recorded half of “I Got You” when she asked the pros whether they could add her vocals in the headset. The industry veterans quickly realized that Olivia had just performed in perfect harmony without being able to hear herself, a move that Scott later said was one of the biggest deciding factors in launching her version of the pop song. “She’s an incredible vocalist,” gushed Shaun.

WHEN SHE DROPPED THE ‘CUZ’

We had serious second-hand stress when Olivia added a ‘cuz’ to the chorus (which did feel like a great fit) and was told by Shaun that she needed to drop it immediately. Anyone else have flashbacks to delivering their first speech in grade three and being told by the teacher to never say ‘um’? Just us? Olivia stayed cool under the pressure, once again impressing the judges and us. And….sigh of relief.

WHEN JANN CONTINUED BEING THE BEST

Jann continued being the coolest, giving both Olivia and Jayde individual pep talks before they hit the stage to perform their versions of “I Got You” live. Even after thousands of shows, millions of albums sold, and countless awards, Jann still understands that performing in front of alive audience is, in a word, terrifying. Everything makes us nervous. Maybe we *could* be popstars!

Also, LOL at Jann’s arm band comment. This woman is a Canadian treasure.

WHEN OLIVIA TRANSFORMED

The mentors made their feelings about Olivia’s performance clear, applauding the singer for making “I Got You” her own and staying true to her sound. “It’s a transformation,” said Scott. “I can’t believe it’s the same person,” said Jann. “Her voice is haunting off the top,” said Shaun. “Time to download ‘I Got You’ and play it nonstop,” said us.

Scott was stunned with how much Olivia had grown as a performer since her audition only two days before, with Jann crediting Olivia’s charisma and voice as being the reason the live studio audience was enraptured by her performance.

So, new duet from Olivia Lunny and Jann Arden? We think Shaun Franks would be down for producing it.

The finished product? “I Got You,” fresh out of the studio and into our playlists:
