What’s your number? Five? 13? Two? When it comes to partners, most of us can probably remember exactly how many people we’ve done the deed with. And even if there were a couple of drunken one night stands in there (hey, we don’t judge) most of us probably have a vague idea of our number, at least.
But what if we told you that your number is actually higher than you think it is? And we mean way higher. As in millions higher.
Sex Degrees of Separation is a new online tool developed by Lloyds Pharmacy, and it kind of takes the fun out of the whole Kevin Bacon-based game. When we tried it, our actual number of partners skyrocketed from single digits to millions.
The pharmacy developed the tool to encourage protected sex and we think they do an excellent job of proving their point. By calculating how many people your partners are likely to have slept with before you (and then adding in those partner’s partners, their partners’ partners and so forth for six degrees), suddenly it becomes crystal clear why using a condom is a top notch idea.
We dare you to try it for yourself and see how many hypothetical notches on the old belt you actually have.
“This calculator illustrates how exposed you can be to STIs, and how important safe sex is,” reads the site. “But even when using condoms, you are still at risk from STIs such as warts and herpes, and you may already be carrying a symptom-less STI.”
The bottom line? Be sure to keep up with regular doctor exams and don’t be afraid to ask your partner about their sexual past. Even if it is while you’re swiping left or right over a beer or glass of wine while looking for your next Tinder hookup.
