Zahara Jolie-Pitt‘s life didn’t have an ideal start. She was conceived via a brutal rape and her mother, who couldn’t deal with raising a baby, ran away from home, leaving Zahara with her grandmother. Her family looked for her, but after a fruitless search, they gave the six-month-old up for adoption. Angelina Jolie was already a single mom to Maddox when she adopted Zahara in 2006 and less than a year later, then-boyfriend Brad Pitt adopted the two after she legally changed their surnames from Jolie to Jolie-Pitt.

Six years later and things are a whole lot different. Mad and Z were joined by four more siblings but their parents are no longer together. And if that’s not enough to cope with, Zahara’s biological mom has surfaced, wanting to speak to the girl she gave up.

Mentewab Dawit Lebiso told the Daily Mail about her hopes of reconnecting with Zahara.

“I just want her to know that I am alive and here and long to be able to speak with her,” she told the paper via an interpreter. “I do not want my daughter back but just to be in contact with her and be able to call her up and talk with her.”

She continued: “Angelina has been more of a mother to her than I have ever been. She has been with her since she was a baby, but that does not mean I do not miss her. I miss her all the time. I think about her every day and long to hear her voice or see her face. I know when she has a birthday but I am sad because I can’t celebrate it with her. I would so much want to celebrate with her on her birthday and other special days…I long to be able to have regular contact with her.”

The Ethiopian native has had zero contact with Zahara since she gave her up for adoption. “I would like Zahara to know she has a mother who loves her as much as Angelina,” she said. “Before I die I would like her to know about me and that she has family here in Ethiopia.”

Lebiso, who, by the way, looks exactly like Z, then made a direct plea to Jolie, saying, “I would ask Angelina to let me speak with [Zahara]. I do not think it is too much to ask.”

This is a lot to take in, for Lebiso, Angelina and Brad, but this is A LOT for Zahara. She’s already going through her parents’ very public split, which is more than enough for any kid, but add this to just being a 12-year-old girl and geez. Poor thing.

If a meeting does go down, it probably won’t be happening anytime soon, at least not until Angelina and Brad square away custody. And if this is all truly genuine with only thoughts of love for the girl, then this could be a sweet, wonderful thing for everyone involved. But the timing of it all is a little concerning. Z (and the rest of her siblings) don’t need any more drama; here’s hoping this is all on the up and up.
