Drew Barrymore has added a new title to her ever-growing list of accomplishments and is now a bona fide daytime talk show host. The Drew Barrymore Show premieres on September 14 and in a sneak peek of the inaugural episode, Barrymore reunites with her Charlie’s Angels costars Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz. Good morning, Angels. In the teaser clips from the premiere episode, Barrymore speaks passionately about the trios’ close relationship, saying "The thing that I love about our friendship is that we have been there in all the big and important moments, we’ve also been there in the small moments and the casual moments and the reason we are such good friends is because it’s real and we go through real stuff with each other. It’s not a Hollywood fairytale.”The longtime friends, who first appeared together as the crime-fighting agents in the 2000 remake of Charlie’s Angels, were happy to appear on the maiden voyage of Barrymore’s talk show, but as the host revealed, her personal request to both Diaz and Liu did not go as planned. Barrymore sent each friend a video of herself in the bathroom asking them to appear on her show. Or, so she thought.“To save time, I sent her (Diaz) a video while I’m getting dressed,” said Barrymore, referencing her comfortable relationship with both women. “You don’t see anything, I’m not that dumb,” joked Barrymore. After a few days without a reply from Diaz, Barrymore began to worry and called her friend. “It turns out, a young boy got my video,” said Barrymore. “Lucky him!” added Liu.After hearing her from her frantic friend, Diaz asked Barrymore to resend the very personal clip. “By the way, it’s like seven minutes long,” laughed Diaz. “It’s epic. This is some material that honestly is going to last him three or four years.”Barrymore sent a video to Liu as well, which also somehow went astray. “I sent Lucy a video crying in my bathroom. I was fully clothed this time, I didn’t take the risk. And she didn’t get the video either,” said Barrymore.
Thankfully, Barrymore has hired professionals to handle the more technical aspects of her show. The three friends remained separated throughout the interview in an effort to maintain physical distancing practices. Proving that a global pandemic can’t stop daytime TV, Diaz wasn’t physically in the CBS Broadcast Studio in New York and instead appeared virtually from the CBS studio in Los Angeles. The seamless technological feat is explained on the show’s website and reveals that a green screen, plus a matching rug and remote camera operators all come together for a Star Trek-like result that makes it appear as though guests are sitting directly across from Barrymore. So, some things in 2020 are cool.
Barrymore’s interview with her Charlie’s Angles co-stars wasn’t the only reunion to take place on Monday’s show. In a sketch filmed for the premiere, Barrymore and her longtime friend and frequent co-star Adam Sandler spoof the ending of their 2004 rom com 50 First Dates. Barrymore wakes up as her character Lucy, who suffers from amnesia, and watches a tape made by her husband Henry (Sandler), who tries to explain 2020 to someone who has no memory of the past nine months while also plugging his many Netflix projects. Sandler ends the skit with a sweet tribute to his friend, adding “You are going to make people so happy every day, every time they see you. You are magic. The whole world feels it and I’m so lucky that I know you so well.”
