Just when you thought the drama between former spouses Johnny Depp and Amber Heard couldn’t get any worse, Depp’s libel trial against the British tabloid
The Sun got underway this week to dredge up all of those old feelings. And the reports coming out of the courtroom are
dramatic, to say the least.The former couple, whose two-year marriage officially ended in 2017 amid allegations of abuse on both sides, appeared in a U.K. court to testify on July 7 and 8. Depp is suing
The Sun following an April 2018 story that called him a “wife beater,” and his entire suit relies on who was actually the aggressor in his relationship with Heard.“These sick claims are totally untrue,” Depp
said in a written witness statement, revealing that he has faced casting issues in the years since they were made. “She was the abuser, not him,” Depp’s lawyer, David Sherborne, also said in a written statement. “She is a highly complex and aggressive individual who suffered extreme mood swings, would provoke endless circular arguments, and fly into violent rages.”[video_embed id='5854917430001']RELATED: Johnny Depp has reportedly been fired from the 'Pirates' franchise[/video_embed]At the trial, Depp and his team revealed through written witness statements and photos that in 2015 Heard sliced off the tip of Depp’s finger when she threw a vodka bottle at him. Depp also recalled a time in which Heard supposedly punched him repeatedly in the face on a private jet, and that he was forced to spend the remainder of the flight locked in the bathroom. He also alleged that one time Heard “or possibly one of her friends” defecated in their bed as a prank.“Rage-filled violent incidents on planes were common with Amber,” he continued in his statement. He then alleged that Heard is “a calculating, diagnosed borderline personality; she is sociopathic; she is a narcissist; and she is completely emotionally dishonest… I am now convinced that she came into my life to take from me anything worth taking, and then destroy what remained of it.”When defense lawyers cross-examined Depp he admitted that he had “taken every drug known to man” by the time he was 14 years old, but that he has never hit a woman. He also admitted to
spending nearly $30,000 a month on wine (not all for him), and revealed that in the past he had given drugs to Marilyn Manson and
Avengers star Paul Bettany, but in recent years it was Elton John who helped him to get sober. Meanwhile in his testimony Depp also accused Heard of not being on board with his sobriety, and of openly using cocaine in front of him.At one point during the trial, defense attorneys showed Depp a video that Heard had secretly taken of him kicking kitchen cupboards and swearing while pouring wine. Depp said that he “wasn’t particular proud” of himself, but denied that he became a monster when he drank. “It’s not Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” he said.Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is exactly how Heard referred to her ex though. On the trial’s second day the defense shared an unsent email from 2013 in which Heard called Depp’s drinking and drug abuse the monster. “I just don’t know if I can do this anymore,”
she wrote. “It’s like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide. Half of you, I love. Madly. The other half scares me. I can’t take him. I wish I could, but I can’t. The problem is, I never really know/understand which one I’m dealing with until it’s too late,” she continued.“The drinking assures me that I am dealing with the monster. The abused scared insecure violent little boy. I just can’t tell where the line starts. Also drugs seem to guarantee I will be forced to deal with the monster as well. Once again, it’s knowing what/how much/ and when – which makes all the difference. Sometimes the hangover, the morning after is just as bad as the full on disco blood bath I’ve come to expect.”On the trial’s second day lawyers also accused Depp of slapping Heard across the face for mocking his Wino Forever tattoo, of trashing a trailer after hearing that one of Heard’s friends had inappropriately touched her, and that he had continually “descended into physically destructive behaviour.”Depp has previously denied claims that he hit Heard, something his ex
